Welcome to the online home of my Argentina journal, a diary of my actions on expedition in South America in 2001. |

I arrived in Argentina in July 2001 on an trek with World Challenge, a group that organised charity and adventure expeditions for college students and VI formers. I kept a diary of my thoughts and experiences while I was in country. The expedition was certainly a memorable experience for me, and for all the right reasons. I would certainly be lying if I said that I enjoyed every minute of my journey. Being stuck with the same thirteen people for an entire month is not easy when you're living in each other's pockets. In those four weeks, I walked many many miles across mountainous terrain, rescued lost sheep, was dribbled on by llamas, and learned to have a full body wash with only five wet wipes! In the whole time I was there, I only had six showers, and two of these were in the last two days before flying home. Also, you can track my thoughts during the day-long treks we made to get across the mountain ranges. After so long with the same people with nothing new to talk about, I'm sure your mind wanders a little and you'd appear to be going slightly crazy to anyone from the outside world. I remember that I sang the same three songs again and again and again, a couple of times for eight hours straight, sometimes in my mind, sometimes out loud. I would fantasize about fresh vegetables, chocolate biscuits and English tea, as the emails home to my parents will attest. Somehow, we all came through it in one piece. If I could relive the whole month again, I would. The highs, the lows, the sickness and laughter. Because it is experiences like this that really teach you about yourself and the world in which you live.
